Heat illness

Grounded in OSHA General Duty Clause 5(a)(1) and NIOSH

  • 1Heat illness is preventable and can kill. The rule is Water, Rest, Shade. OSHA enforces it under the General Duty Clause.
  • 2Drink about one cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes, before you feel thirsty.
  • 3Anyone new or back after a week off must acclimatize: build up over 7 to 14 days, starting near 20% of a full workload.
  • 4Take breaks in shade or a cool area, and make them longer as heat and humidity climb.
  • 5Heat exhaustion is heavy sweating, headache, dizziness and cramps: rest, cool and hydrate. Heat stroke is confusion, hot dry skin or fainting: call 911 and cool aggressively now.
  • 6Use the buddy system and watch each other for symptoms.
Discussion questions
  • a. Who on this crew is new or just back and still needs to acclimatize?
  • b. Where is our shade and drinking water today?
  • c. What would you do if a coworker got confused and stopped sweating?

Awareness content, not a substitute for OSHA-required training (LOTO, silica, excavation competent person, respirator fit testing). The signed sheet is evidence a briefing happened, not proof of certification.

General-construction awareness content grounded in OSHA standards, current as of 2026. Numeric thresholds are quoted regulatory values. Site-specific hazards, state-plan rules such as Cal/OSHA, and equipment procedures may be stricter; defer to your competent person and site safety plan.
